The Goldtouch keyboard solves three problems:
- "Square" keyboards force the hands to twist at the wrist.
- Most keyboards are higher in back than in front, requiring you to bend your wrists up.
- Most keyboards are wide enough that you need to reach to use a mouse.
The Goldtouch keyboard splits along the center, rotating on a joint at the upper center. It's adjustable, too, unlike most split keyboards, so almost anybody should be able to rest his/her fingers without twisting wrists.
The joint that lets you split the keyboard also lets you raise the center, up to several inches. If you have broad shoulders, a high-enough lift keeps your wrists flat and straight.
Most keyboards have their cursor control keys and numeric keypad on the right-hand side, putting a right-handed mouse out of comfortable reach. It's even worse with most fixed-split keyboards -- they're even wider. The Goldtouch keyboard has no numeric keypad and moves some of the cursor control keys to the left, making for a narrow keyboard. The benefit is that a mouse is much closer to your side. The drawback is that the cursor control keys are no longer in their normal position or configuration. The four arrow keys are in the lower-right corner in their normal "inverted-T" configuration. The Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, Insert, and Delete keys are on the left side. There's no way around it: You'll have to retrain your fingers.
I've tried many different ergonomic keyboards and the Goldtouch is my favorite.
