| merc13's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo3 2000 PCI |
I purchased my Voodoo2 2000 PCI from Value America two years ago for only $50. (Normally $100 at the time, I used the excellent 50% off) And the Voodoo3 2000 still commands about $50 on the used market today, amazingly still a good buy. I have overclocked my Voodoo3 to 166mhz from 143mhz, which is what the 3000 models are clocked at. I had to add an extra fan for it to be stable at that speed, but it was worth it to save buying the more expensive model. My Voodoo3 2000 currently resides in my main computer, a PC. But its original home was an older Mac clone with a G3/300 upgrade. With my Duron running at 1055mhz and all the memory tweaks the V3 does 30FPS+ in Quake 3 at 1024x768 with all the options turned to high. This is very nice for a card that only cost me $50 two years ago!
Granted, the Voodoo3 doesn’t compare to the latest offerings, but I am personally quite happy with it. Why should I spend hundreds of dollars on a video card now when my Voodoo3 does everything I need quite nicely? The next generation of games will most likely force me to lower resolutions, but until then, I will be cruising with my V3.
In addition, when I do replace the V3 it will have a new home in my old Mac. (now without the G3 upgrade) The Macs puny 1MB built-in video will not be missed, it doesn’t even support 16-bit at 800x600! So not only will the V3 enable it to maximize the resolution and colors, it will also bring the 2D and 3D up to par. The Voodoo3 also has excellent Linux support. Or so I hear, Linux dislikes me.
Finally, I would highly recommend the Voodoo3 2000 PCI for anyone with an older Mac who wants to add a little punch for very little money. (603e, 604e, early G3’s) It also makes a great card for an older PC. (K6, K6-2, or PII) Or in my case, if you are cheap and spend all your money on the rest of your components. :)
