Quake 3's Loss is Unreal Tournament's Gain!Jan 15 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Everyone who is a first person gamer has drooled for months anticipating the release of Quake 3, including myself. Then the hard truth comes crashing down not all the visual effects in the world could make me enjoy this game like I did Quake 2. Why? Lets start with the simple flaws, the age old factor AI (Artificial Intelligence)which the game seems to have none. The computer will often run right by you with out even realizing you are there in easier modes in more difficult settings it just seems to cheat and use the stage as a giant shooting gallery. Fine we will leave this behind for a brief moment and I will say Id has done a spectacular job on graphics and the game runs smoothly on a network. Now back to the bad, the weapons are just slightly redone from the same onslaught that every other second rate first person shooter can throw at you. Shame on you Id such a gorgeous engine and such little creativeness on the core of the game the weapons. After about 1 hour I was yawning, so here comes the cavalry my friends who were itching to play the game on my lan at work. We all found ourselves not the least bit overjoyed by this anticipated title.(Yawn) Then there was a light, Unreal Tournament. At first I thought great another let down, but I was wrong. Playing UT is nothing but pure pleasure. The graphics were breathtaking leaving nothing to be desired, gorgeous backgrounds, fluid motion, and god forbid yes Human like intelligence. Within an hour playing the single player missions, I swore I was playing amongst my fellow peers. The AI was what seemed to be flawless acting as intimidating as the players you face on the net and when the action was to hot to handle the computer knew when to adjust to my skill level. Though not much of a Skin collection to choose from that slight flaw did not seem to matter. The game offers a wide variety of game play for both single and multi-player matches. This included Death Match, Capture The Flag, Domination, there is even a system that tallies your players frag records. The weapons are great ranging from a smooth sniper rifle to a guided nuke, they have to be seen to be believed. Overall UT is a solid game and has all the features a player would want. The network play is solid, graphics are triumphant, control is smooth and AI just tears down the house. With Bots like the ones in UT who needs friends they do it all. No my words on Quake 3 may be harsh but you just expect more from the guys that made first person famous. It is a good game but not Great. There is a new king in town and I don't do not mind bowing down. UT is #1 on my list and should be #1 on yours. |
