| lakers0340's Full Review: Palm IIIe Personal Organizer |
** Overview **
This is a great beginner's PDA! I couldn't believe how easy it was to learn. The years of experience of the Palm company really shows in how incredibly well designed this product is. If your life needs a bit of organizing you can not go wrong with the Palm IIIe.
** Features **
I won't go into all the detailed specs of this model. You can check that out yourself at Palm.com., which is selling the Palm IIIe for $129.99 right now!
The built-in features that I found most useful on the Palm IIIe are the scheduler, the address book, the "to do" list, and the memopad. The scheduler is well designed, but can be further enhanced with 3rd party applications. With a click of a button you can easily see just how busy (or how kicked back) your day will be. The "to do" list must be the function that I use most often. It's very easy and fast to use and keeps all your priorities straight.
There are literally hundreds of 3rd party applications that can be downloaded to enhance the Palm IIIe. Many of them are freeware and some of them are shareware which can be purchased at a reasonable price. My personal favorite 3rd party app is Diddlebug. It's free and it allows you to write "post it notes" and attach alarms to them. There are many other programs, ranging from street maps to dictionaries that you can install onto the palm.
The Palm IIIe comes with a hotsync cradle. Just slip the Palm IIIe into the cradle and with a push of a button all the info (from the built-in apps) on the Palm is synchronized with the information on your computer. Again, ease-of-use design was clearly well thought out.
** Palm IIIe vs Palm M100 **
The Palm IIIe is being replaced by the Palm M100. So what does this mean to the Palm IIIe? It means you can buy the Palm IIIe for less than ever! You don't have to be afraid of the Palm IIIe losing support from software support. Almost all programs developed for the Palm OS support the Palm IIIe. Too many Palm IIIe have been sold for the developers to ignore it. I would not recommend buying the Palm M100 for the sole reason that the screen is smaller than the Palm IIIe. These screens are tiny enough, we don't need them to be even smaller!
** Final Verdict **
The greatest strength of the Palm IIIe is the ease-of-use. This is a very important factor which is often overlooked. Computer savvy users may think that ease-of-use means less functions, but in fact this is not the case. An organizer needs to be easy to use, thereby, you spend more time on your tasks, and less time on "organizing". 3rd party programs can alawys be installed to increase the amount of functions on the Palm, however, if you really want to use programs such as dictionaries, and maps, you will be better served if you buy the Palm IIIxe. It is essentially the same as the Palm IIIe except that it includes 8mb of memory (instead of 2mb). However, if you only need a PDA for organization, a Palm IIIe is the perfect fit!
