Datebk4, just released, is the most ambitious, impressive application ever to be released for the Palm OS. LOADED with functions, the programmers should be commended. It is highly customizable and beautifully integrates the address book, to do list and memo pad perfectly with their Datebook. It costs $25, but its value is unmeasurable!
INTRO
The name may sound familiar to many of you Palm users out there... It is the follow up to Datebk3, a top rated application that was so good, Handspring licensed it for the Visor. Datebk4 is more ambitious- it has multiple calender views that the default operating system has and allows you to link events to addresses in the address book. Datebk4 is so complex, it has a 71 page manual that describes the power that this program has
FEATURES
1.Multiple Calendar views- Datebook 4 has the following views- daily, weekly with bars (bars represent the events you have scheduled), weekly (all 7 days are shown on the screen with the events written in), biweekly, weekly list, monthly (with or without icons), 4 month view, yearly view, and event list view (lists all of the events in your calendar). If that isn't enough for you, you can also customize your own views in the datebook!!
2. Integration with addresses- Datebk4 allows you to attach a person's phone numer and address in the datebook to a calendar event. You do not have jump between address book and datebook anymore! While in a view in datebook, if you hit the Palm's address book button, an address book pops up as a split screen with your calendar. Pressing the address again makes it a full screen address view, and one more press closes the address book. This may sound complex but trust me it is very easy
3. Integration with Todos- Like in datebk3, todos are incorporated into your calendar. Again, like the addressbook split screen view, there is a splitscreen view for the todo list!
4. Great Birthday Anniversary Functions- If you enter the year of the wedding or birth in the datebook (ex- John Smith 1977) Datebk4 tells you how old John is. A great function is that Datebk4 can be made to set give you advance reminder of a birthday or anniversary. This way, you can't forget anyone's birthday, as Datebk4 will show you the event days in advance!!
PROS-
1.Events can go past midnight -The Palm's datebook was annoying in that a scheduled event could never go past 11:59 of that day. Not anymore! Datebk4 allows you to schedule an event to end the next morning!
2.Integration with address/ todo/ memo- easy to use and works great This feature will be big. I was a big fan of Action Names because it was integrated with the address book. Needless to say, I am going to revise my Action Names review to tell people to get this program instead! While Datebk4 does not have an address book with many features, it works and works well
3.Beaming functions- great!You can beam anything- business cards, appointments </B>
4.Can schedule new events/ addresses/todos/memos with the press of one button. If you hit the new button, a menu comes up that allows you to schedule each of these things and more.
5.Many alarm functions!-You can preset alarms to your todos and datebook items. Not only that, by pressing a button, Datebk4 will tell you the next alarm that will sound, when it will, and allow you to kill snoozes for that event!
6.Customizable views!!You can save a view you like. Datebook4 remembers all of the preferences you had for that view. It is great
7.Icons For those who loved Datebook 3's icons, they're back! The same ones are included but they are great and customizable as well.
8.All profits donated to wildlife preservation- not only is Datebook4 the best, they are also philanthropists. Imagine if Microsoft all of its earnings to charity?
CONS
1.Currently a few bugs There are only a few bugs in the program which may cause a soft reset. There are not many bugs, and moreover, Pimlico always seems to release frequent updates. They are a highly professional company! The bugs should not deter your from buying at all- they are minor and don't detract from the program at all
2.Size over 400 MB. However, this program is well worth it size.
DATEBK4 TIPS
•This I just discovered and love it. I recommend making the following custom view- the birthday list!! To do this, tap on the yearly list view (the view all the way on the right). In the preferences, menu, check the box that says filter by icon/text. You can either list all events with birthday cakes or all events with the word birthdya in it. (obviously, you need to assign a birthday cake icon to BDays to do this.) Next, hit the diamond button to save a view, and save this list as Birthday. There you go, you now have what the program DateMate does, a presorted list of Birthdays!!
WHO SHOULD BUY IT?
Anyone and everyone with a Palm! This program is that good. In fact owners of Datebk3 only have to pay $10 and apparently may not have to pay anything after June For everyone else it is $25. Don't blink an eye...just get it. Even if it means eating Ramen Noodles and peanut butter for a month.
VERDICT
I think you get my message. This program is the best. Try it out. They give you a 45 day trial period with full use and no nags! Most certainly you will want to buy this. Even Datebk3 owners will be amazed with the advances that the programmers have made..for their price of $10 it is a no-brainer- they should get Datebk4 too! Think of it as charity- you are buying to help wildlife and more importantly, to help yourself :)
NOTE ON ACTION NAMES
I was a big user of action names. It seems that Datebk4 took the best of Action Names and integrated it into their Datebk4. There is really no reason at all to use action names whatsoever.
