| jmrm5's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 |
The Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 could be had for about $2199.00 in most areas. I unfortunately spent a little more then this simply because I bought mine right when this particular model was introduced. (It is ok though, I was very pleased with my purchase right from the start.
My Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 had been ordered from my local notebook computer dealer, and I have been very pleased ever since I had picked it up that rainy afternoon. Mine came complete with a Pentium III running along at 700MHz, a 15" active matrix LCD, and 64MB of RAM. The hard drive was adequate at 12GB.
This is the first notebook I have ever owned which has not been powered by an ATI Rage Mobility series video card. Rather this notebook came to me with a S3 Savage IX Graphics Controller with 8MB RAM. This card is quite capable and very comparable indeed to my old Rage cards and I have been very satisfied with it’s performance as so far.
It should be noted that the Toshiba Satellite Pro comes equipped with a built in 6X Max DVD-ROM. This really is something for those who travel and own DVDs. They really pass the time quickly. (I never seem to grow tired of the Matrix DVD Kung-fu scene). DVDs really play and look well with the video card and the 15” screen.
Also this screen looks and seems brighter than my friend's Sony VAIO screen. I cannot remember what model he had off the top of my head, but it did have a 14.1” screen and my Toshiba screen did indeed seem brighter (a characteristic others in our office also conferred).
As a whole, the Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 looks and feels quite tidy. It really feels more expensive and substantial than its direct competitors. I really like how the unit looks visually understated. It has no flashy colors or fonts, just understated beauty, reminiscent of a fine luxury sedan. (I do not know if that analogy is seen by others but, that is how I see this particular computer).
One minor complaint I have is that this computer has a un-friendly PCMCIA eject button. I use this card slot frequently since I am a salesman and my GPS unit has a card that connects via the PCMCIA slot. The button is ok I guess, but my older Dell notebook had a really easy to use eject button.
With the definite hardware strong points and the relatively minor problems I have had with this computer, I would have to certainly recommend it to other consumers. The Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 offers a capable processor, DVD, 15” TFT, and understated “luxury” looks make it a worthwhile travel companion for myself. Thus, for these reasons it is worth a solid consideration when “new notebook” time comes along.
