I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert on hardware: I spent 4 years of my life in various hardware capacities, from technical support all the way to test engineering to pre-production engineering. Abit was recommended to me by one of the other guys in the test lab, and after using one of their motherboard in my business servers... I was incredibly impressed.
I've been through quite a few motherboards, and I have to say that Abit is what my heart has set on whenever the issue of building a new server comes up. Let's break it down by area of usage:
* - CPU: The motherboard is jumperless. It's completely setup in BIOS, so for those Celeron overclocking people, this is a dream come true. All you need is to set the speed in setup, and reboot, et voila! You're done. This particular motherboard has the ability to see up to 450mhz.
* - RAM: The maximum capacity is 768 megs in 3 dimm slots. I typically use this motherboard in server running Linux. One of my servers has 384 while the other has 128.
* - SLOTS: GO PCI!! 5 PCI slots makes my life easier. I have the ability to stuff 64-bit cards as opposed to 16 bit ISA cards. The motherboard also sports an AGP slot... unfortunately, I don't use it as I run Linux servers. A cheapo pci video card is good enough for mobile keyboard/mouse/video units.
* - ATX: This was my first p2 board, so switching from AT boards to ATX was something of a switch as I typically had XT keyboards. Be prepared to buy ps/2 keyboards/mice as ATX is not XT compatible (of course).
All in all: Abit is the way to go if you want a reliable and dependable board.
