Tips to Speed up browsingSep 04 '00 Write an essay on this topic. In order to make your online time more productive I have listed below some of the tips I've gained in the years I've been online. I'm hoping some of them may prove beneficial to those reading this epinion: Fast Solutions * 2 Windows - If your monitor is large enough, then you can browse with 2 windows open. While your reading in one window, you could be downloading pages in the other (or researching epinions, or uploading files to your site, etc...). * Autocompletion - With Internet Explorer, it provides an option to suggest the rest of the web address you are typing in the location box. This concept is also beneficial for login/password type boxes. (Internet Explorer => Tools => Options => Content => Personal Info). * HTTP:// - I noticed my sister used to type this a lot when entering web addresses. The http:// part is never really needed. * Improve viewing area - As defaults, the buttons on your Browser are HUGE and take up vital screen space (in my opinion). It is possible to make them half the size and to get rid of their text descriptions. (IE => View toolbars => Customise). * Quick search - In the location (address) box, simply type in what you are looking for, and the browser will automatically go to a search engine for you. * Keep your browser up to date - Microsofts website (www.microsoft.com) provides the latest version of Internet Explorer, and also other upgrades to fix bugs. While the newer versions might not always be better, I've found with each revision of this software that it is getting better with each version. * Turn graphics off - Some sites take an age to download. This might be due to a slow connection, but in many instances there are pages which contain so much graphics that whatever content they had on their site which you might have been interested in, will never be seen - there's only so long people will wait for pages to download. Turning off graphics means that especially on message forums, where sometimes the signatures of posts take up collosal amounts of time to download won't affect you. * Respect Email - If one of your friends sends you a large email, and you reply to them with maybe one sentence, it might be better if you deleted the original text and simply sent your friend the one-liner... Advanced Solutions * Cover CD's - In the UK (I assume this is similar in other countries) we have shelves full of internet and computer magazines, with cover CD's packed to the brim with most of the popular latest internet programs. This might save you time buying the CD, rather than wasting bandwidth and time downloading the program from the net (unless you are on a high-speed link). * Compress - If you are sending large files via email, I would advise you to consider using WinZip (or even the free powerzip) to compress your files. Large text based documents compress well, but image files like jpg/gif are already well compressed. * Right Mouse button - Take advantage of the options available in the menu when you click the right mouse button. Sometimes its faster than going up to the menus themselves. * Banner Ads - Are you fed up going to sites and having too many banner ads increase the time it takes the page to load up? Programs like Webwasher exist which will block the download of banners and pop-up ads, thus giving you more bandwidth to download the relevant parts of pages. http://www7.trans-it.net/de/index.htm * Microsurfer - Maybe if you surf quite a lot, and visit many sites, this utility program - which enables you to drag links from sites into the microsurfer and then let it download these sites - could prove helpful to you. * Filter and Colour coded emails - Programs like Eudora and Outlook Express provide options whereby you can receive and filter messages into certain folders depending on who they are from, subject lines, text contained within mails etc. This can help filter out spam aswell. Colour coding can help you prioritise those mails from important friends and business contacts. The above represents a selection of some of the tips that I have been using while online. I'd hope that for those reading this that some of the ideas might help to make the time you spend online more efficient, easier and productive. |
