But finding the music to play on your winamp is a totally different story. Now most people use Napster. I’m sure most people know what Napster is and if you don’t then there are about five billion epinions on it and you can quickly figure out how to use this nifty program. Personally I have never downloaded it. I have heard about it way before the lawsuits started showing up, but I never liked the idea of people ftp-ing into my computer. And now most people are a bit scared to use Napster because of the lawsuits and getting kicked off the site (true irony). So what’s a music hungry person supposed to do? Here’s what I have always used. First use your friends. I know it may be hard to believe but your friends are all card carrying members of the mp3 club. ICQ and mirc are great mediums to transfer these large files easily. The hard part is trying to figure out what your friends have and to “browse the aisles” of your friend’s hard drive. But if you know that your friend has it then just get it from him. You can ftp to his site if you feel that is faster or easier, and if he lets you! What makes this very easy is if you get a ripper (a program that allows you to take a cd and create the selected songs into mp3 format) for free online and just borrow your friend’s cds or your local library’s cd’s to get new music. Now if that’s just too much work for you there are some great websites to download music from where you don’t have to ftp into. One such site is www.themusiclover.com. This site consists of links to download the music. There are special instructions on this site to download the music. Generally most sites want to stay away from the mp3 format for legal reasons. This requires you to save the file and then change the file type. You can do it right before it downloads in a really simple process. When it asks where you want to save the file, you are allowed to change the name of the file and therefore the type of file, for example if the file was song.class, you just change it to song.mp3 before pressing save. There are other sites such as oth.net. But I have not had that great luck on it. There is such a small chance of getting a song without giving the owner a song from your own collection, which is something I will not do. This site takes a really long time (please be prepared for a few hours of your life to be sucked away). MP3.com is also a site that I used to go to. I really don’t think that they have any good songs anymore, and I have not gone there in a very long time. They are in a bit of trouble right now or at least they were during the summer. So generally try to stay away from trouble sites. In conclusion, I believe that the best way to get mp3’s is first by scamming them off your friends (make them do all the dirty work), and then through other mp3 sites. Themusiclover.com really is the best site since it offers all of the billboard top 60 as well as mtv’s TRL and other country’s top songs.
