ABS could use improvement
Jan 30 '00
I researched dozens of computer sellers before deciding to go with ABS. I must admit, the main reason I bought from them is due to the low prices for up to date systems. They also had several recommendations from a couple of well known PC publications.
I went ahead and put in my order and was told the PC would be there in 10-14 days. Well, it actually took 6 weeks. One of my biggest gripes is the customer service. Everyone that answers the phone in their company (cust. service & tech support) has a very thick foreign accent. It is very difficult to understand them. Also, I would often get different stories as to the status of my order.
On the good side, when the PC finally got to me, it ran (and still does 9 months later) great. I did make several upgrades myself to improve performance which is another good thing – the system is easily upgradeable. I have worked on many big name PC’s and it is often very difficult to upgrade or replace parts on your own because they intentionally make it so. ABS leaves a lot of empty slots and the case is large enough to get around in. Another pro is their return policy. I had a video card and a monitor go bad and they replaced them immediately at no charge.
On the bad side, the tech support is terrible. Other than being difficult to understand, I know far more about computers than any of the various techs employed there and I would say that I am an intermediate user. I eventually gave up on calling them for any support at all. And even though the system runs well, a lot of that is due to the modifications I have made to the system. I did have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows to get everything working well.
All in all, I am not sure I would recommend them to anyone. If I did, it would be to an experienced computer user, certainly not someone new to computers due to the lack of good tech support and a lousy initial configuration.
