For 300 dollars less than a PIII 450 Presario 1800, I purchased a Celeron 500 I couldn't be happier about. With built in DVD w/ TV-out and Ethernet port, this notebook is power machine. I upgraded to 96 megs of RAM and got the 14.1 inch screen, sacrificing a little viewing size for more longevity. The great things about this computer include its darn fine DVD player, the very bright and clear screen, its SPEED (I upgraded from a Pentium I 200 with 32 megs of RAM), and its good battery life.
I would very high recommend the Presario 1800 hundred line to college students and others with internet access through LANs. Anyone that wants great portability and tons of features, this is one great computer. The purchase price of mine was $2148, which I'm sure will go down very soon...
Addendum 8/5/2000
Well, I've been playing with my Compaq 1800 for a while now and still love it. One annoying feature of compaq's, I've discovered (I have one of the original FreePC compaq's as well) is their insistence on running numerous programs you do not even know about. I hit my ctrl+alt+del and low and behold, there are 10 or 15 things I didn't know existed, nor can I tell what they do. Beware of this. My 96 megs of RAM get eaten up faster than I'd ever dreamed because of this.
All in all, it's still wonderful. I just watched a movie yesterday. Hoorah for DVD! I've got Athome now and that just makes everything great!
