Grammar Police? No.......Jan 23 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I work hard to write quality reviews. I proofread all of my own work and I pay attention to the spell-check when I'm done. I read many Epinions each day and quite a few of the reviews are junk. I am not referring to reviews written by foreign-born members or people with learning disabilities. I am referring to reviews that barely meet the 100 word minimum. I've seen reviews that contain no capitalization or punctuation. I've seen Epinions that contain so many typographical errors and spelling errors that it is not possible the author even looked twice at the spell-check. I don't have a problem with reviews that contain a few grammatical errors. Alternately, wonderful grammar does not in itself make a good review. I DO have a problem with reviews that contain nonsensical writing and careless errors that could have been corrected if the author hadn't been in such a hurry. Epinions is a wonderful program but in order for it to continue I think some changes will have to occur. I believe if we use the Web of Trust the way it was intended, Epinions will be self-policing. If we refuse to trust those who write shoddily they won't make money and will be forced to either improve their reviews or drop the program. If we blindly trust other members, we encourage careless writing and abuse and I'm afraid this will ultimately lead to the demise of Epinions. |
