I was excited to order (with the 10% employee discount from my employer) a new Dell Dimension XPS T600. It came as I ordered it (within the limitations dictated by the plan assigned to University employees). I ordered a unit with 512 RAM, 27 GB hard drive, DVD, Readable/RW CD-ROM and a flat panel display.
The problems began as soon as I tried to shut it off for the first time. It wouldn't. After going through the troubleshooter with little success, I contacted Dell's tech support hackers. After suggesting all of the things that I had already attempted, they talked me through re-installing all of the factory installed software via the zztop program. The problem keeps popping up intermittently, but I have gotten only a sophisticated run-around on subsequent calls.
The next problem is that I could not (and still can't) install either of the two flat bed scanners that I own (an HP and a Microtek - both new). No help from Dell; HP and Microtek have bent over backwards, but there appears to be no solution on their end. They report no similar problems with other owners.
On top of everything else, this "rocket" freezes up on routine use, reports an unusual number of program errors, and is a generally poor performer.
I have the best service plan available from Dell, but it has served no good purpose. The people with whom I dealt were not in the least helpful and spent most of their time transferring me to other departments until I hit an apparent dead end. The last thing that I was told is that they will not replace the unit.
I suppose that if you have no problems with your unit, then the world is a happy place. Beware if you have a glitch...the shine on the Dell reputation may then show some tarnish.
