This was a very affordable good resolution (1200 dpi 42-bit) scanner which I bought on the strength of a review in MacWorld. Frankly I have to wonder if that reviewer actually used this scanner with a Mac. I could barely get it to function with my G4 running OS 9.04. The problem was definitely with the software. When I was able to get it to scan it did quite a good job, and had some nice features, like batch scanning, but nine out of ten times it froze up while using it, and necessitated a forced restart of the computer. Something in the software caused me other computer problems also, lie start up problems, which disappeared when I uninstalled it.
This scanner comes with a 35mm slide adapter which did not function correctly at all. (I laughed out loud upon reading the directions which tell you to scotch tape the slide to it.) To Microtek's favor, they did offer to replace the adapter, but that was the least of my problems with their product.
What really blew my mind were the many typos and grammatical errors in their dialog boxes. How could they let that happen? Their phone tech help was easy to reach, but not very helpful. One lady suggested that the problem was with Photoshop 6, and that I should call Adobe and get them to change their software. I don't think that's going to happen. This scanner might work great with Windows, or on a Mac with some other scanning software if it is compatible, but after a week of trying to use it, I packed it up and sent it back to where it came from, and bought an Epson Perfection 1640SU, which is working perfectly, and has wonderful software. Live and learn.
