| OpalMan's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8000dn Printer |
Easily the most impressive printer I have used. This is a fully loaded printer that can handle a massive workload on a network. It is a typical HP product in its general appearance but its durability outmatch any other HP product we use.
We use a lot of printers in our office, dot matrix, Inkjet, and Laserjet. Most need quite a bit of downtime and maintenance to remain in use for very long. This is not true with the 8000. We have used it for almost two years now without so much as giving it a single day off. Our production environment uses this as its default printer and it of course, requires it to be available pretty much 24/7. The 8000 fulfills these needs quite adequately.
It can handle quite a bit of work and boasts two 500 sheet feeders included. It also has a built in duplexer and network card. This machine was built to service a network. As far as the workload and speed, we actually send several hundred pages to this device on a daily basis. This isn’t a lot to most people, but you have to bear in mind this is almost constant use. Once a week it gets the big job, a monster 1100 page, report, printed duplexed on top of its normal workload. Believe it or not, this printer is fully capable of turning out this report in approximately an hour, provided it is fully loaded when the job starts.
As with most HP products, it comes with a variety of different drivers to load, depending on the uses you will require out of the device. Of course, a lot of the drivers are for other models of the device but they are there if you need them as well.
HP customer service is, while not necessarily among the top, above average. They don’t keep you on hold forever or require that you go through 43 levels of the automated system to reach a person. Their techs are fairly knowledgeable and for the most part know their products.
Should you buy this printer? That’s the whole question here isn’t it? My first reaction of course is to ask what you are going to use it for. To the average user I would have to say, no this printer is not the one for you, it is way more printer than you need and is far more expensive than what you should be spending. On the other hand, if you are working in a networked environment and need a workhorse for a printer, this is definitely among those you should consider. Is it necessarily the right one for you? Maybe, maybe not. That is ultimately up to you to decide based on your particular needs and the available options.
