| gerper's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 33 Computer Speakers |
A few years ago, when I bought my screaming Micron 233 PC (well, screaming for about a day), I got a set of speakers with my "state of the art machine". The speakers were about the size of a closed fist and sounded like cans connected together with a string. Well, a couple of weeks ago, when I really got into the digital age and got a CD burner, I realized how poor the stock speakers for my computer were and knew there was only one solution: buy some new ones. Not just any old speakers would do. I wanted to have a three piece speaker system with a subwoofer and two smaller speakers to create the "surround sound" effect when listening to music on my computer. And of course, I wanted to go on the cheap, as I didn't want to dump even more money into my computer, so I set a limit of $60.00 for my speaker system.
A friend said that they recently picked up the Altec Lansing ASC33 speakers and he went onto say that they are great speakers at a nice price. Fair enough, let the shopping begin.
Price - I was able to find the Altec Lansing ASC33 for $39.99 on sale at Comp USA. The retail price on these is $49.99 so shop around for a good price (Costco and Sam's Club also have them for the cheaper price also).
Product Specs - The Altec Lansing ASC33 speakers are a three piece set. The subwoofer, which sets on the floor, puts out 15 watts, and the two smaller, desk speakers put out 10 watts of power (and are also magnetically shielded so they will not damage your monitor).
The subwoofer (or PowerCube as it is known) is designed to put out low range bass that completes the wide range of audio output from the sound system. What does all this mean? Simple, great sound.
Sound Quality - Excellent. My ears were amazed with I plugged in these speakers. I just could not believe that such great sound quality could come out of a system so small (and that was relatively inexpensive). I have used these speakers for both music and gaming and find the sound quality to be really high.
Ease of Use - Plug them in and you are set. I put the subwoofer on the floor and put the smaller speakers on each side of my monitor. There is a volume control and the system does not use batteries as it runs off of electricity. There is also a volume control on one of the smaller speakers. Plus, the speaker system looks really nice.
After using these speakers for a few weeks, I am just kicking myself that I didn't buy them sooner. Great sound at a really reasonable price make these a must have for even the most casual computer user. Gamers will love the surround sound that these speakers create and music fans will appreciate the quality of these whenever they are creating CD's, listening to MP's or just a CD. Overall, a great product that will really give your computer system a whole new look and more importantly, sound.
