Pros: FAST speed (for 56k), good customer service
Cons: typical $19.95 rate, even with DSL/cable becoming commonplace, no ASP
The Bottom Line: Iglou is a very fast and reliable UNIX-based ISP. If you don't need a lot of frills, just good and fast internet service, Iglou is the way to go.

| bkiser's Full Review: Iglou Internet Services |
I first got on the Internet full-time in 1992. I've moved around a bit, and because of this I've had various Internet service providers. I first investigated Iglou for my boss around 1993 when they were only in Louisville (hence, the name Iglou), and they were fairly expensive. Although what I'd read about them was good, he decided not to go with them because the price wasn't right. Back then, there were only a few ISPs around, and Iglou was one of the pioneers in Kentucky. They were also expensive.
In 1995, I moved to Lexington, Kentucky and discovered that Iglou had branched out into the area. ISPs had become more commonplace, but not quite as competitive as they are today. After checking around, I took Iglou simply because a friend liked them quite a bit, and the price was on the low end of average. I had them from 1995 to around late 1997, and I never had a busy signal! Access was always very fast as well. After I moved from Lexington, I guess I was spoiled by Iglou. I asked my next ISP if they could provide that kind of service, and they just laughed. They actually thought I was lying. That should have let me know what kind of service to expect, but I took them anyway and regretted it. I had 3 ISPs after leaving Iglou, and they had all sorts of problems (i.e.: busy all the time, no newsgroup access, server down, etc).
I moved to Frankfort about 6 months ago, and checked immediately to see if Iglou was in the area. They were. I was a little anxious because it had been several years since I had Iglou, and lots of things can change. I'd noticed they didn't have DSL in the area, and Iglou hadn't dropped their prices to stay competitive with a few lower-priced ISPs, but I joined anyway, mostly out of hope that they'd provide the same great service they did years ago.
Today, I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed. The 56k line is incredibly fast, and almost compares to the 128k cable modem I used to have with an ISP in Bardstown, Kentucky. They still allow 5MB of web space per user. They run a UNIX Apache server and don't support ASP (Active Server Pages--see my comment for details on what this is), except for Frontpage extensions. This is bad for me, as I want to learn ASP, but I don't want to penalize them because of this. They aim their service at the "average" surfer out there that requires connection to the web, newsgroups, and email. They charge a $20 activation fee, but this fee is waived if you sign up online. All access is fast, you get 2 email accounts, space enough for a nice static HTML homepage, and excellent support. If you refer someone, you get a $20 credit. I've already received 2 in the last 6 months, and I wouldn't refer people to a service that I didn't believe in.
Iglou has branched out to most of central Kentucky, Cincinnati, and parts of Tennessee. If you are in those areas and aren't satisfied with your ISP, I recommend you call Iglou and don't waste your time with other ISPs. They honestly don't get any better than this.
Thanks for reading.
