| Gr8ful's Full Review: Iomega Zip 250 External SCSI Drive |
This piece of equipment has been extremely valuable to me. Installation is a snap if you already have a SCSI controller installed. I have used this drive for everything from Norton Zip Rescue to installing software on it. Since it is SCSI and gets detected before the computer starts to boot the operating system, you can actually boot to this drive, as long as you have a bootable SCSI controller like the Adaptec 2940.
This drive holds 250MB and that is enough to install programs to it. I have installed many different games to different disks and they run fine. Also, being SCSI, if you use a good Ultra SCSI controller you will get 40Mbps data transfer rate and this is faster than regular DMA33 hard drives. So, the speed of the drive is fast enough to run software directly from the Zip drive.
You can use lower end SCSI controllers with this drive but to get the speed and boot capability I suggest using either the Adaptec 2940 series or compatible controllers. Using a low end SCSI will get you 20Mbps data rate and this isn't bad but it may not be fast enough to run some software.
This drive is also great for Norton Zip Rescue. It makes a condensed copy of your system files and program files and you can boot to the drive if your hard drive fails or has a problem. Norton Zip Rescue will then try to find the problem and correct it. Using the parallel or USB version of this drive you would have to boot to a floppy before the computer would read the Zip drive and this is painfully slow.
I suggest this drive to anyone needing a good removable-disk drive. It is somewhat expensive but once you own one you wonder how you ever did without one. The disks are also expensive but if you buy a pack of 3 you may not need anymore for a while. The price is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
