I don't usually write negative reviews about anything, as a matter of fact, this is my first, but this product has got to be brought to everyone's attention.
A few weeks ago, I had a great deal of computer problems and had to have a few very major items replaced. One of them was a new processor! I lost everything on my hard drive, all my files were gone, so I guess I started from scratch when I finally got up and running again. It's hard for me to go into details about this, since I'm not very computer savvy. I've just about taught myself everything that I do know over the last 2 years, since getting my first computer, I've learned a lot here at epinions and from a very good internet buddy of mine and have a very basic knowledge, I guess you could say.
Last week, I noticed I didn't see my IBM anti-virus come on when I would log on in the mornings. I went to the place where I used to go to start it, if I wanted to check something and to my surprise, it wasn't there. It was nowhere to be found! I looked in other folders and in my windows explorer and it had just vanished. I called IBM, but since my warranty was expired they wouldn't or couldn't help me.
So, this past Friday I went to Best Buys, to buy a new anti-virus. I was thinking I'd get a Norton, since I had heard many things about it but saw this McAfee. I took both to the booth where the person that repairs computers was ,held them both up, asked which was the better one, and he said the McAfee. since it was ten dollars less then the Norton I thought well, that's a good deal.
The next day I tried to download it and had a great deal of problems, but managed somehow to get it working. Problem was, each time I would log on I kept getting a window that opened saying it was "mounting volumes" and would take forever before I could get on line.
Yesterday, I called the toll-free number given in the getting started guide and talked to a technician, (that is, after a long wait on hold,) to help figure out what I had done wrong . He said he would e-mail me instructions and I had to do it myself, first remove it then download it again. I wasn't very happy with this situation but thought, well, I'll try. The e-mail never arrived ,so I called again, this time I had a much more helpful tech and he walked me through the entire procedure..I never could have done this myself following instructions in an e-mail. But it was finally downloaded properly, so he said, I said thanks and goodbye and went merrily on my way to try to get back into cyber space.
Well, what a nightmare day and night I ended up having. Needless to say, I couldn't do anything. I went to Epinions to post an article I had written and right after submitting it I was thrown of AOL. Thankfully it was right after, not in the middle of it, and for the rest of the day I couldn't stay on line more than 5 minutes. I couldn't even access the web half the time and when I did, whatever it was I trying to do, or wherever I tried to go ,it was just impossible. And forget about epinions. It just wouldn't load pages, and my name disappeared from my profile page so I had to log on each time I tried to enter.
I called Mindspring,(they are my ISP) to see if it was my connection and explained the situation...I was told they hear about this very often about McAfree and I should call them to have them help me remove it, not to do it myself because I might not do it correctly and leave bits and pieces behind, whatever that means, So I called repeatedly and of course couldn't get through except to be put on hold. I did hear a lot of music though, while waiting.
This morning I called first thing and got through immediately. This time I was lucky enough to speak to a very helpful lady tech. She asked me which program I purchased and when I told her , she said "well, it's no wonder" that's product is not supposed to be on the market anymore. There have been too many glitches with it. Well, I was stunned, why on earth didn't either of the other 2 techs I had spoken to tell me this? Why did Best Buys have this still product still on their shelf? Anyway, she walked me though the process of removing it , which wasn't difficult at all. I actually think I could have done it myself.
So, that's my story. This particular product comes in a red and white box, doesn't have a code I can give, but it says new version for windows 95/98 workstation only 3.1/dos/os/2...if you are in need of an anti-virus, I would say stay away from this one.I can't imagine a virus being worse than this.. but thankfully, I've never had a virus so I can't be sure.
One other thing, she did warn me about a new virus that says "you have pictures from" unless it's an official one from AOL, don't open it, if you don't have an anti-virus on your machine.
