I had a similar experience with a S&F cd burner about a year ago. S&F had me run some software to analyze the drive, turns out the drive had problems. They replaced the drive.
Even though they replaced the drive, I still had problem, so back on the phone I went to their tech support people. They had no other answers, and the test software didn't indicate any more problems.
I had purchased a spindle of CD media (50 CD's), and I ruined about 25 CD's trying to figure out what was the matter. I finally tried some different CD media, and the burner has worked great ever since.
I took the remaining CD's back to Fry's Electronics, where I had purchaed them. They check the CD's out, and determined that the media was bad. They gave me my money back
Hope changing media will help you, also.
