Re: <SIGH> (3dfx Stock) (Reply to this comment)

"As a shareholder in 3dfx, I can only hope that my dogged long position will eventually pay off."
My condolences. Watching it drop over 85% in one day must have been QUITE traumatic :-(. Although It's rather ironic that AFTER plummeting into the 10-25 cent range, 3dfx stock seems to have become a day trader's dream, going through 10-20% swings just about every day it seems. How nice it would have been to scoop up thousands of shares last week at 10 cents each, and pull a 250% profit already :-).
Good luck, however it all shakes out.

As a shareholder in 3dfx, I can only hope that my dogged long position will eventually pay off. At least I did not get in when it was near its high water mark!

Re: What a shame!! (Reply to this comment)

"Without 3dfx, who will be a "direct" competitor to Nvidia and their Geforce chips? Unlikely ATI or S3 or Matrox. Nvidia will become a monopoly like Microsoft."
Thanks Roy (and everyone else who has commented on this review thus far). I think ATI can still remain a good competitor to nVidia as long as their follow-up to the Radeon doesn't disappoint. They still have such a huge market share from all the OEM deals they've had, and even if the Radeon isn't nearly as popular as the Geforce cards, it's still pretty competitive in terms of performance.
Even if ATI does falter, I wouldn't worry about it TOO much. There have probably been dozens of graphics card companies that have been in the lead at some point, and there's always new competitors to compete. After all, nVidia came out of nowhere and took the lead in just a few years, so it's always possible that it'll happen again.
Of course, if somehow it becomes a situation like Creative Labs with their Soundblaster Live cards (which have had practically ZERO innovation since Aureal went bankrupt), an nVidia monopoly will hardly be good for anyone.

Predicting the Future (Reply to this comment)
by jjbrickley
Looks like you need to take up a position predicting the future, you did a pretty good job of it! I know, I know, all the hints were there, I follow the graphics markets and have to make predictions myself for my job, though those predicitons are on chip trends/features and the polygon/texel races....
Keep up the good work!

3dfx sold to nVidia! (Reply to this comment)
by vicwang
Well it looks like "the hammer has fallen," and even earlier than I expected. 3dfx announced today (December 15) that they've agreed to sell off the entire company to nVidia, including all 3dfx technology and trademarks. It just needs to be approved by the shareholders which, considering the state of 3dfx stock right now (under $2 per share) I'm sure will happen pretty quickly. Here's the official press release, and I promise this time it's very much real :-).

Great job on this. I really like the format, as well as the hypothetical situations you presented. Definitely an HR, and I am adding you to my "alerts" list as well.

Re: Interesting review (Reply to this comment)

"Ever considered being a reporter? Your reporting was quite good and almost fooled me."
Thanks May! I'm very glad to hear you liked it, and that you were "almost fooled". When you spend such a huge chunk of time reading all the latest news and articles, it's hard not to pick up on a few things ;-).
As for being a journalist, reporter, etc. I've always thought that'd be cool, but with zero credentials and no journalism degree, I figure that's a pretty tough field to get into. Take my dream job, for example, a job writing for Maximum PC magazine; without a journalism degree, I'd be basically SOL. So for the near future, at least, it looks like all my writing will be exclusively here at Epinions :-).
By the way, congratulations on your newfound Computers Advisor status!! After reading your exceptional computer reviews (most especially your performance guides), I knew it was only a matter of time until you joined the ranks. Great job.

Maximum PC (Reply to this comment)

PUTER:
Oh yeah, I've also got to give you props for actually recognizing those two lines from Maximum PC! I didn't think anyone would actually recognize them, (they are only two lines, after all!) but I figured I'd add the disclaimer at the end just for the sake of accuracy-in-reporting. I hope there weren't any other similarities I was unaware of, since the rest of the article was written from memory (with the exception of various statistics I had to look up, of course).

Aureal vs. Creative (Reply to this comment)
by vicwang
EMCPHERS and WOLF_KNIGHT:
Thanks for the compliments! Unfortunately, I think my decision of format for this article might just take my number-of-times-actually-read to number-of-page-hits ratio to an all time low, and my average was already pretty low to begin with :-). Great to hear you enjoyed it, though.
PUTER:
Yeah, the whole Aureal vs. Creative really is too bad, and it's almost soap-opera-esque to anyone following it. One thing has really stood out to me: I heard that before Aureal released their A3D cards (back when Creative monopolized the market), sound card prices hardly decreased from one year to the next. You could look at all other PC components (CPU's, video cards, etc) and they had all kinds of innovation, with prices steadily decreasing, yet sound cards were pretty much the same year after year. If it weren't for Aureal, who knows how long it would have taken for the Soundblaster Live cards to be released, if at all?
Sure the all-inclusive sound card supporting both A3D and EAX might seem like the ultimate sound card, but I can't imagine it being terribly positive in the long run.
BTW, thanks for catching me on the commas thing. I thought I had caught them, but apparently quite a few slipped through :-).

interesting idea (Reply to this comment)
by puter
Hi Vic,
Using a press release format and hypothetical (although very possible) situations was an interesting idea. I recognized the quotes and other information pulled from Maximum PC immediately. The results of the Aureal vs. Creative legal battles are too bad, aren't they? It would be nice if Creative dumped EAX in favor of further developing A3D--but that's another story.
In order to give a little better sense of authenticity to the fictional press releases, I'd probably stick with the formal punctuation rules. For example, wherever a comma or period follows a quotation, I'd stick it inside the quotation marks.
Keep up the nice writing.
