QuadraBus Technology Baby!

Written: Dec 01 '00
Pros:Powerful USB capabilities
Cons:Has to wait for Extensions to load.

Being a proud owner of one of the early generation Beige G3's I had to take the intiative to buy my own USB card! I've also wanted to get a monochrome laser USB printer and a USB game pad for emulators. This led me to buy my four port PCI USB card. It sports QuadraBus Technology which means that it gives the full 12Mbps for each port. There is no shared bandwidth here baby! This card is so powerful it supports 127 devices on each port..adding to a total of about 508 devices in all! I mean common! When in your lifetime are you going to use soOOoOOo many devices?!? But anyways it's good to have these features! = ) (MORE POWER!)

On installing the drivers:
This card did not come with a driver disk or CD. It gave clear instructions in the installation booklet that you had to go download the drivers from apples site. I thought to myself, Kewl! This card can run on OEM drivers from Apple! This has got to be good...that means support for this device will never come to a screeching hault! So I downloaded the drivers and installed the ones I needed and ta-da!

My reasons for buying this USB card is because I want to get USB peripherials. ADB devices are not being supported and also anything USB that comes out for PC's us Mac users know we will get! Which opens up all my options for the things I want to get like my Optical Mouse I bought, a new monochrome laser printer, and a control pad for emulators. This tiny card greatly expands your outdated computer. Spend fifty bucks and keep your computer for another two years! I mean...when you get a new computer this card can then be used in that one too...you can't lose!

One thing I don't like about this card is that before the extensions fully begin to load at startup, you can't do anything if you have a USB mouse connected to it. I have my LogicTech mouse connected to it (which you can also read about!) and sometimes when my computer freezes and I have to reboot and the little "repair" screen comes up before any of the extensions load my mouse will not work. The drivers for the USB card did not load yet and anything connected to it won't work...so you have to wait until it is done "repairing" and then you click the <OK> button.

Other than that I have no regrets buying this USB card. I'm sure you won't have any regrets too!
