| rasw's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 33 Computer Speakers |
I picked up two sets of the $50 Altec ACS33 and remain quite satisfied.
I purchased them mainly on price. I wanted speakers for my PC that were slightly better than the 2-piece system I was using, but I didn't care enough about the quality to want to spend a fortune. I just wanted to be able to listen to a CD or MP-3 file on my computer while I work without it sounding all that bad. I wasn't disappointed.
The speaker is a three-piece system. A subwoofer--small by subwoofer standards but large compared to the other two speakers--sits on the floor while the two satellite speakers sit on either side of my monitor. One of the speakers has a volume control on its base.
Since low frequency sound isn't very directional, so the theory goes, you can achieve good stereo sound by using separate speakers for the high end and one for the low end.
I found that this system was a little lacking in the mid range, the subwoofer really can boom and the small speakers reproduce the high end. Compared to my full-sized stereo system in the living room, it does have some gaps in its sound.
Still for $50, it was a big improvement over what I was used to using. Now when I listen to my favorite MP3s while I work, or tune into the Internet radio stations on wallofsound.com, I can enjoy the music.
