Palm OS is much more Flexible than WinCE

Apr 26 '00

I have worked closely with both of these operating systems and when evaluating which is better we must accurately evaluate the needs of the user. Both Palm OS and Windows CE have many advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, and experience, the Palm OS offers a more flexible and practical interface for handhelds, but we will closely examine the pros and cons of each system.

We will start with the Palm OS. The greatest feature of the Palm OS is its space management. The Palm OS system takes up less than 25kb of resident memory a mere fraction of that of its Windows CE counterpart. The allocation and storage of data by the Palm OS is much more efficient because it runs on an eight bit rather than a thirty two bit platform like Win CE. This means you will actually be able to store more information on your 8MB Handspring Visor than on your 16MB Compaq Aero (for example). There is also an overwhelming support by third parties that produce addon applications and conduits for the Palm OS. There are many more bugs in WinCE than Palm OS. The disadvantages of Palm OS is its rather primative graphic ability (a result of the eight bit platform). This limits its usefullness to insurance and real estate agents (for example) that might want to display photos or record voice data. The peripherals also are not as advanced for Palm OS than on the Win CE. I have seen some astoundingly accurate scientific probes and the like for Win CE machines, which means Palm OS may not benefit the field engineer or scientist.

Windows CE is very user friendly and most of all familiar to its users. Those who are not as computer savvy may benefit from the WinCE. The new version is also shipped with a word and excel viewer/editor which is good for those who may want that feature with out having to add extra software. The video playback and resolution is awesome, a great benefit to real estate agents or insurance claims evaluators. I have seen some wicked accurate pH probes for the WinCE and also other scientific data instruments. The WinCE, however, does tend to crash often and have bugs leading to less third party support. Also memory allocation is not as efficient as with Palm OS, do to the GUI and 32-bit platform.

I recommend Palm OS for the all around user, business man, retail salesman/manager, or computer geek. For those more high tech needs, Win CE will do the job and I usually recommend it for those not as comfortable with computers.
