When people use a PDA, they intend for it to be stable, fast, and have a specialized purpose. Some people argue that the Palm OS isn't flexible and doesn't have many features. I tend to disagree.
Stability
First of all, I've never had the Palm OS crash itself. Some poorly programmed third party applications may crash it, but I have never had this happen either. The Palm OS is very simple and therefore does not allow the user to many options to crash it. Some people don't like the Palm OS because most of the programs are fairly limited. These limitations provide for stability and speed. I don't think that I need a thousand options and menus for an address book. Palm keeps it simple.
Speed
I think the Palm OS is very speedy considering that the fastest models only have a chip that runs at 33MHZ. Because the Palm OS is not bloated like Windows CE, you can run applications at a nice speed, and switching between programs is a charm. Windows CE does have some nice features, but for the cost, Palm OS is far superior and much faster.
Specialized
The Palm OS is made for simple tasks such as storing your contact list, keeping your schedule up to date, and taking small notes. Other third-party applications increase the functionality of the OS. I think Palms focus on keeping the OS small, simple, and limited to several specialized functions is very important. Most people don't need extensive spreadsheeting, graphics, and web capabilities on their PDA.
Ease of Use
The Palm OS is very easy to use. The handwriting recognition is outstanding and easy to learn. The included applications are consistent in style and make good use of the screen space. Once you get used to the way that Palm handles information, applications, and storage you will appreciate the Palm OS
