I used to think that you could only be considered a "serious" writer if you carried around a laptop computer. Then I discovered the AlphaSmart.
First things first: If you want to play games, surf the net, manipulate photos, etc., you don't want an AlphaSmart. It's not a computer. It's a text input device. But if you're looking for something that does basic word processing, does it well, and does it cheaply, this is the machine for you.
I use it all the time in my freelance writing work. It's light, portable, and its two AA batteries, I swear, last seemingly forever. Transferring text to my desktop is a breeze with the infrared connection. And its eight separate files let me work on several projects at the same time. Best of all, it makes me write, since there are no distractions connected with it, like the Internet. I also find it tremendously useful as a stay-at-home mom with small children. I can use the AlphaSmart throughout the day in whichever room I need to be at the time. And if the kids get their hands on it, there's no way they can break it. (It was originally designed for elementary school children.)
I'll sing the AlphaSmart's praises to anyone who'll listen. It's made me a more productive, more creative, and generally speaking, a happier writer.
