How much Space for my Junk do I need.

Nov 24 '00

Ok I know its not junk, its actually very important data to you. If you want to make sure you always have a place, aren't running out of space, having to constantly delete files and empty your recycle bin. Having to delete temp files, internet temp files, software installations. Uninstall programs, etc. All to get a few extra megs you'll probably just fill up with MP3's. So here's the run down on the space you need.

Regular windows installation with additional software you will almost need on your computer now takes up 4-5 gigs of space. So you need at LEAST that.

Additional programs, larger games, these take up hundreds of megs and just drain away at your space. averaging 200 megs a piece (maybe even more) therefore 4-5 of these type programs fill up 1 Gigabyte of space.

MP3's, we've all got em or heard of em. They happen to be Big, even if they are small compared to the wav file on a CD, they take up on average 4-5 megabytes. a hundred of these fill up a Gigabyte of Space.

So with Standard use, even business applications, maybe for the Gamer in all of us and the music enthusiast. I recommend a Minimum of a 15 gig hard drive. This allows extra space for Windows to allocate Virtual Memory. The more space the faster windows runs.

Anymore though, as programs get larger, games get bigger and more advanced, you might even need to upgrade your hard drive. In the mean time, stick with the 15-20 gig range minimum and you'll never run out of space before you update your Whole computer.

This is what you want, to Sell your whole computer, give it to the kids, neighbors, friends, Something. Before you have to upgrade parts of it. This way you're buying a whole new Car every couple of years not buying pieces and fixing up an old car.

I have had goodluck with the following brands and in that order.

Maxtor
Quantum
Western Digital
Seagate.

stick with a name brand, you will Definitely need 5400rpm hard drives, but if you can get it, and it doesn't cost you that much. Go for 7200rpm's as it might increase the overall speed of your computer.
