I'm Pro-GuruNet
Written: May 23 '00
Pros:Fast, Easy, Effective, Friendly, Convenient, Attractive
Cons:Sometimes a little off on the context, sometimes doesn't recognize phrases
I download a ton of junk. GuruNet isn't junk.
GuruNet is one of a very, very few programs that actually makes the migration on my system from one system reformat to another. Just to give you an idea, the others are things like my e-mail client, Winamp, my compression and cryptography utilities, and a download manager. In other words, it has become an essential part of my systems.
Ever since IE5 completely defiled its address line searching ability ("? searchstring") by limiting you more to the MS search engine, I've been looking for a nice little quick and simple search app.
GuruNet does it for me.
The alt-click interface is a stroke of genius when coupled with its ability to do context searches. Even when the context recognition fails, your still a step ahead of where you would normally be. Just type a more accurate search string into the manual search bar, nothing lost.
Don't get me wrong, this is not an in-depth search tool at all, but at least half the time you want to look something up, you don't want an encyclopedia entry on the subject. GuruNet furnishes you with a few good leads and some interesting tidbits on a subject.
