Point-CounterpointJan 17 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I respectfully disagree with each point below. o The miniature interface is not scaled to what humans normally require for visual input. This depends on the task. How big is a Post-It note? How big is a business card? How big is a daytimer? How big is a sales receipt? o The user must continuously monitor the state of the battery, lest over time it falls below the nominal minimum strength and permits all the(precious?) data within to evaporate into the ether. My Palm V has never fully discharged. The longest it has been away from its cradle is two weeks. I will never, ever have a problem with battery life. If I ever did, I wouldn't lose any data. o The usual reasons for using these things leave me cold. Many of the supported functions can be approximated by the use of two somewhat older technologies: a pencil and a not-too-large piece of paper (which, by the way, won't erase itself). Try searching through 500 scraps of paper. Then trying tapping Find. No contest. Paper may not erase itself, but it's easy to lose and inconvenient to back up. o As with any other technology, there is the hard-core cult of true believers who know that everyone on the planet will need one of these devices tomorrow (or next week, at the outside), and that the only holdouts will be technophobes who are still in grief over the passing of the rotary phone. Unbridled passion is appropriate for certain things. This isn't one of them. I accept that not everyone needs a Palm connected organizer. I can keep track of my life much more easily with one. |
