I compared several notebooks from several manufacturers including IBM, Compaq, and Dell. I found that you get comparable power and options for less money at gateway.
I searched for a Portable for under $1400, 32MB ram, 32x cd, and Celeron Processor.
I added a Deluxe carrying case and took the year of free aol off (you actually pay $50 for the "free" year) and found that you get a better deal at gateway for the Solo 1100 Notebook than any other machine in it's class (processor, ram, cd/dvd drive, and storage space).

If you are in the market for a laptop and don't need a super powerful machine (most people don't need a super fast machine and will never even touch the resources even on a smaller machine) then swing on over to "Gateway Country", you will be glad you did.
