HomeComputers & InternetPC LaptopsWhat Should I Know About Compaq Notebooks in General?

Just one thing...maybe two

Jul 10 '00

I bought my Compaq Presario 1610 laptop about five years ago, and I only use it for word processing, Internet, and e-mail. There is one problem with the computer that an experienced computer guru would know about, but not me, and that screwed up the unit badly. There are little peg legs on the underside of the unit which need to be down while the computer is on. I didn't even know they were there. Apparently, this is where the cooling unit in the computer vents, so by keeping them closed, I was frying the thing from the inside out.

I ended up having to send the computer back to Compaq (thankfully still under warranty) and have them replace the damage I did. Keep the legs down!! And be gentle with them because they break easily.

I think the computer is fine for my use. I got a regular mouse to use with it because the attached mouse is difficult to use. And I usually can't keep the computer on for long periods of time. There is an energy-saving sleep function that sometimes is difficult to boot out of.

For my purposes, the computer is fine, but I can see how it would be difficult to use for business purposes or for activities requiring a lot of memory.
