| magiccrab's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 R500VT |
Well to start off, I’ve owned my Inspiron for about a month now and am thrilled with it. However some of the other reviews I’ve read about it have been slightly misleading about it. Many seem to argue that the price is ridiculous, saying that $3500 is way too much for this machine.
Personally I disagree for two reasons: Firstly, beside actually being worth $3000, compared to the Compaq counterpart, which I have had experience with, is $200 more and gives trouble the whole time, trust me, I’ve had to reformat one of my associate’s machine just to get the thing mildly operational, after Compaq’s customer service was so abysmal that we had to go at it on our own. Secondly, the machine didn’t cost me $3500 at all! I bought it from Dell Direct and it only cost me $2700 – AND that was with the ram upgraded to 96megs and the bigger hard drive!
Unfortunately Dell has recently removed the P3 550 option from their custom machine, but I still highly recommend the new 650 and 700mz processors. But let me tell you the main reason that I bought my laptop – the screen. I don’t think that anyone at my office had ever seen a laptop with a screen even half that size of my Inspiron’s impressive 15,4 inch monitor. I am a web designer and graphic artist and the screen blew me away. With the 8meg Rage mobility graphics adapter it runs like a dream. It is perfect for my ever day work and Starcraft looks beautiful on it. The processor also performs extremely well with things like multi-tasking, which is the fall in many other laptops.
There are a few problems with it as nothing in this world is perfect. For starters, it is a heavy machine, but then again it is designed to be a replacement for your desktop. I must also admit to having one or two problems with the sound, but have had no problems with video conferencing and my web phone, with net access working like a charm while the P3 bubbles nicely though shockwave sites. One thing that I still use my PC for is Quake 3 and Soldier of Fortune, due to the fact that 3D cards cause major heating issues in notebooks, Half Life however still runs amazingly on my Inspiron. The only other problem I have is productivity, because it’s difficult to work while there are people standing over you admiring your notebook’s screen ;)
In conclusion, I will say that this notebook can easily be used as desktop replacement, even though I don’t use it as such. If you are at all evolved in the graphic industry and are looking for a laptop that makes Photoshop sing to you then this is machine is waiting.
