Mindspring.com, is one of the best commercial ISP’s. I’ve been a member of Mindspring for several months now, I signed up back in December. I was never a big fan of the huge commercial giants, having had bad bandwidth experiences with AOL, Prodigy and C-serve (now part of aol). Well for some reason I decided to subscribe to Mindspring. I got online and started surfing, I was connected at about 50333, not true 56k, but that didn’t matter, at first I was like what! but then I came to realize that Mindspring, for a commercial ISP, had some of the clearest bandwidth I had ever gotten from a dialup.
I was pulling downloads from across the web at a standard 5 or 5.6 kb per second, I was really impressed that this was a solid regular occurrence, whereas with my old mom & pop ISP, that I would rarely pull solid downloads it would always fluctuate. Well that wasn’t the biggest selling point for me, I am a gamer, and gamers know what a bandwidth and a low ping can mean in game. So I popped in my Half-Life, and started gathering server information, I had several servers I was pinging 120 to and such, my average ping in game on these servers stayed within 12 points of 120, I was extremely impressed. I had an awesome game, no packet loss, and had a thrilling experience on a commercial ISP, something up till now I never thought possible. I even at times while sending files over icq or downloading via napster go above the 5.6 k…I don’t know how that happens, but all I can say is that Mindspring has definitely got my seal of approval. I have even had issues where I’ve contacted their tech support and they are extremely knowledgeable and helpful people. If you have to use a commercial ISP, I definitely would use Mindspring, they are the way to go. One final note, no busy signals.
