How to choose the right accessory cards.
Feb 09 '00
There are many different types of accessory cards out there, that you can put into your computer. Some examples are TV cards, Radio cards, and 3D cards. I will try to shed some light on the different types of these cards. There are differnet types of slots these cards go into they are called PCI, ISA, and AGP. You have to check your computer to see what you have free and then purchase a card.
A TV card is a card which has many different features. First it is a decoder card and what that basically means is that it will give you a better picture when you watch movies on your computer. Second you can connect your computer to your TV and play DVD's on oyur TV if you have a DVD drive. See my article on CD-ROMs for more info. You can also plug a cable into your computer ad watch TV on there. It is a great little card and it only costs about 50 dollars. I recommend it highly.
A radio card allows you to listen to the radio on your computer. This allows you to record songs from the radio onto your computer for future playback. It is another neat little inexpensive card to put onto your computer. Now I don't have one of these because I don't see the point, but maybe you want one.
This next card is the best card I am mentioning in this opinion. It is called a 3D accelerator card and you actually need one to play 3D games which is the majority of games today. There is a new type of graphics card which actually fits into a slot called an AGP slot. They can give you up to 256 bit graphics. This is amazing. If you do not have one of these slots do not fear, you can get a card for your PCI or ISA slot too. Just make sure it has about 16MB of memory at least. I highly recommend this card.
