| Cornell2000's Full Review: Microsoft Notepad |
Notepad has been a familiar feature in Windows dating back to the 3.1 version and probably even older versions than that one. The fact that Notepad is so ubiquitous is what makes it one of my favorite software tools. I can always hop on a Windows computer, click on the start button, hit run, and type in "notepad" and have a space to jot down a few words.
The Windows 98 version of Notepad is considerably nicer than previous versions because it has a little bit of intelligence. It actually remembers a few of the settings when you close it and recalls them the next time you open it. Many of the freeware replacements for Notepad that claim to overcome the shortcomings in Notepad are no good because they are too stupid. Also new in the '98 version of Notepad is a choice to set the display font. You can chose something other than the awful system font that only Notepad seems to use. My personal favorite is Arial Bold.
A tip that some power computer users probably already have thought of, but beginning users probably haven't, is creating a shortcut to Notepad in your SendTo folder. This will allow you to easily open any weird-looking file in the Windows Explorer using Notepad. To do this, go to Start --> Run, type in "C:\Windows\Sendto" and hit enter. Right click on a blank area of the window and choose New --> Shortcut. Type in notepad when asked for the information and a new icon will be created. Then any time in the future you can right click a file in Explorer and "send it" to Notepad. For example, when you want to view the source code to your web pages and not wait forever for your professional website editor to load up, you could send the html file to Notepad and view it or make minor modifications quickly.
