The Gaming Outpost (www.gamingoutpost.com) bills itself as "The Center of Hobby Gaming on the Internet," and that is pretty much the truth. Anyone at all interested in role-playing, minatures games, card games, and the like will find this site to be an incredible source of information on current trends in the industry.
There are several key features to the Gaming Outpost:
1) News. Updated as frequently as possible, the staff posts just about every news item that is the least bit relevant to the gaming industry, from minor product delays to contest notices to announcements of buyouts and mergers.
2) Forums. Open to the public, these newsgroups offer ongoing discussions of various topics relevant to gamers. A great place to hear about new games, get ideas, or ask for advice.
3) Reviews. The Outpost staff frequently posts reviews of new products. These are well-written, detailed, and unbaised, letting consumers make informed decisions.
4) Articles and Interviews. Various heavyweights within the gaming industry have been interviewed for the site. In addition, articles are frequently posted by people actually working in the industry. Of particular note is the Game Designers Journal series, by John Wick (of L5R fame), where he walks the audience through the process of designing a complete role-playing game.
The Gaming Outpost has a particular focus on small press and independent games, which I find to be incredibly helpful. Many of these games would never be known to the general populance if they were not given the spotlight here. Even if I'm not going to have the chance to play the game, just reading about some of the more offbeat ones (such as Puppetland or Army Ants) has inspired me in my own campaigns.
The Gaming Outpost does a great job of bringing the gaming audience and the gaming professionals together. Check it out.
