| LaFeet's Full Review: EXP 6X USB Slim CD |
While not the fastest CD-ROM available, this is n inexpensive addition to those computers without a CR-ROM.
Being a computer geek (and I use that term with affection mind you) from way back (does Timex Sinclair or VIC-20 ring a bell) I occasionally get to try items out for friends before they commit to buying them.
I have just completed my evaluation of the CDE-650 6X CD-ROM Drive made by EXP products. And I believe that this is a quality product, especially when you consider its price.
The CDE-650 brings the power and flexibility of CD-ROM to any PC with WIN98, NT or WIN2000. As with most CD-ROMs the CDE-650 supports Audio, CD-ROM (modes 1 & 2), CD-XA, Multi-session Photo CD, CD-I, and CD-R types of media.
The Plug and Play capability makes this a snap to install. I was running my trial CD-ROM in a matter of seconds. A nice feature is the (optional) multiport capability.
Able to use USB, PCMCIA and Parallel port (optional kits required for the latter two), makes it one of the most flexible portable CD-ROM drive in the market.
We (my wife helps out with the ergonomic evaluation) loved the light weight (only 1 pound 5 ounces) and small foot print of the CDE-650. The fact that it draws it's own power from the PCMCIA card when connected to the laptop is another bonus. No second power cord to get tangled, no power supply to keep track of.
As stated earlier, this is not the fastest unit on the market. But with a average access time of 120ms and transfer rate of 900 KB (PCMCIA) {800KB USB}, we felt that this was a great inexpensive addition to our household. We returned our friend unit and went out and bought one right away.
While we may never use this as often as the internal CD-ROM on our desktop, it provides an immediate replacement via a USB port should our internal CD-ROM die again.
The kids liked it as a second portable CD player since int contains a head phone mini jack outlet.
An excellent addition to any families PC system, be it desktop or laptop. And an outstanding emergency repair for any PC with a crashed CD-ROM and an open USB port.
