I really wanted to like my new audible player. The idea of getting unique content downloaded in a easy to use package sounds great.
However, the reality is harsher.
I think the most disappointing part of audible.com is the web site. It often takes 2-4 minutes just to switch between pages. This makes shopping on the site almost unbearable. I wish I had done more poking around on the site before buying the player, because anyone can experience how slow the site is, not just paying customers. They have promised to upgrade the site, but I would advise potential customers to wait for purchase until they have done so. It took customer service 3 days to respond to my email, so there customer services appears not to be quick either.
For the patient browser, the rest of the site is functional and purchase process standard procedure. They do have some unique content, such as lectures and magazines But even some of this unique content is quite dated. The only conferences they had on internet travel were from 1997.
The player itself is lightweight and easy to use. However, initial setup leaves something to be desired. There is both a device configuration and a device initiation step and it is not clear why they are separate.
The sound is not great. The effect of the high compression ratio is evidence by the muffled tone as much of the high frequency is lost.
The only other problem was getting the device to play the radio. I tried the procedure they recommend to no avail. However, by working in reverse and trying to tune the radio instead of the transmitter I was finally able to get it to play.
In short, there is promise here, but they have a ways to go to make it customer friendly.
