A Different Hard Drive for Different Needs
Jun 07 '00
In these times a fast computer absolutely needs a fast and huge hard drive in order to operate to its full potential. But many people don't have too much money to spend on the latest technology and have to settle for a little less. Personally I had been using a Pentium 75 until 3 months ago and I still use that computer frequently. All I did to keep it running was get a hard drive that suited my needs. I ended up purchasing a 2 gig hard drive that has continued to work great. During the purchasing process I evaluated the criteria that would make up my next hard drive. I narrowed it down into 3 categories, each representing a different need and a different type of person. This is my criteria for purchasing a new hard drive.
Kids & Families
When upgrading your family computer it is best to purchase a hard drive that is moderately sized and is rather fast. Any hard drive that is from 4 to 8 gigabytes will suit word processing and games alike. For those hard drives most major chains like Best Buy or Office Depot only like to display the largest and the fastest hard drives, try asking a stock boy to go look if the have anything less powerful in the back. You should be able to find one. If all else fails, search Ebay or Yahoo auctions.
Businesses
Knowing businesses, they only upgrade computers if it is absolutely necessary. In this case a 2 to a 4 gigabyte hard drive will do. It is really hard to find these in stores and your best chance at finding one is online. Most online companies supply these in great numbers so you can upgrade every computer but are usually priced way over the real value of it. For the lowest price try a online auction at Yahoo or Ebay but finding a auction that supplies the amount of hard drives your company needs is time consuming. Your best bet is with an online company.
Gamers or MP3 addicts
Being an MP3 addict myself the only thing that I could possibly think about was how much can my hard disk hold. If you fall into this category, get the largest hard drive you can find! 10 gigabytes is not enough! You can only feel secure when you buy a 16 to 20 gigabyte hard drive to suit all your gaming needs. It should not be hard to find one in a store because if you even mention you want a huge hard drive the sales people will be all over you. One draw back is that they are very expensive and many people don't have the kind of money to get one. In this case all you can do is save up because online distributors are even higher in price.
Students and Non Computer Enthusiasts
If you only use your computer for word processing and the internet, don't spend money on something that might become too complicated. Your best bet is a backup drive. There are many backup drive products out there and can prove just as effective as a hard drive. They are rather inexpensive and are easy to set up, just plug and play. These can be found at many computer stores at good prices and online around the same prices as the computer stores. The disks are moderately priced and are very durable, ideal for going from place to place. This is the best option for older laptops and desktop computers.
Before you decide to buy a hard drive, please do some thinking and try to find a hard drive that best suits your needs. Before you spend too much or get a hard drive that is not even compatible with your computer, do your research and make the right decision. Belive me, you can never be to careful.
