NT is okay but?

Written: Jul 12 '00
Pros:Supposedly easy to use, high availability of supposedly qualified technicians, used by most
Cons:Inherently unstable, difficult to scale, unreliable, full of bugs..

NT is fine for some people, and even some companies. We use it for our internal systems because Windows technicians are fairly easy to find. I have been leading and managing web projects for over five years now and I have had an appalling response from all MS server platforms.

For instance, we developed some basic shopping basket functionality which worked for a while. Then we developed another and the first one broke. Then it got busier and got more connections and it broke. It always (if not daily - then weekly) requires a reboot.

As soon as we switched into a Unix platform (I'm a BSD supporter) everything changed. We achieved reliability, robustness and scaleability without any undiagnosable problems.

I know there are successful MS implementations using NT... but I prefer to allow developers to firstly have the skill to work in an open environment and secondly have the opportunity to work in an open environment.

I still work with both Windows and Unix (freebsd) platforms so you are welcome to email me with any questions or comments. I have plenty of examples of various applications in both environments that I can refer.
