| kdonica's Full Review: MicroSolutions Backpack CDRW |
I should have bought one of these sooner. If you are into music, you will love having this CD-RW.
I bought this CD-RW for several reasons:
1. Price ($213 from www.buy.com)
2. It hooks into my Windows95 laptop using parallel port
If you have a USB port that works (my laptop has a difficult time using the USB with Windows 95 - if you have Windows 98, the USB should work) then you will have a much wider selection of portable CD writers to choose from. But in my case, I needed a parallel port interface. If you want to hook this up to your laptop and a desktop, the parallel port may be the way to go also.
The CD-RW comes with Adaptec Easy CD Creator version 4 and Direct CD. This set of software allows you to easily create music and data CDs as well as copy files to your CD-RW just like you would a floppy drive.
So far I have been using this burner to make music CDs and I have no complaints. The quality is good and I love being able to make mix CDs.
It took a while for me to setup and I did have to make one phone call to the MicroSolutions help desk. However, they knew what my problem was right away and gave me a document number that walked me though how to make the configuration changes to my laptop. From what I understand, CD-RW devices are not generally easy to set up - so if this intimidates you, then you may want to wait until they become even more common.
One drawback to this drive - it's big and heavy. I seen a lot of others to know if it's bigger & heavier than others but it definitely takes up a lot of space in my bag. I think if I had been willing to spend twice as much money I could have gotten a slimmer model.
