| AdeenaM's Full Review: Handspring Visor Deluxe Handheld |
There's already been a good deal of opinion on the Visor, but I feel
I must add mine. :)
I think it's great. I bought it a couple months ago to upgrade from
the Palm Professional I had been using for two years prior. I wanted
to upgrade because I had outgrown the 1M memory on my old Palm, and
after having dropped the Palm many many many times, the screen was
starting to get flaky.
It was a difficult choice at the time between the Visor Deluxe, the
Palm IIIx and the Palm V. I really didn't want to spend too much
money, so for what I was getting vs. the cost, the Visor Deluxe
seemed to be the best value. I'm definitely pleased. Although, after
seeing the color Palm IIIc, I kind of wish I had color, but I'm willing
to live in black and white world one more generation of PDAs.
One thing that upset me... when I first got the Visor, it came with
two cradles, one with a USB connection, one with the serial connection.
My computer at home at the time was Win95 with USB support, however
the USB Visor cradle would only work with Win98! (I've noticed several
devices that do this. It was so annoying I finally had to upgrade
to Win98). Currently, I have the USB cable with my computer at home
and the serial one on my computer at work. I hot sync regularly and
have only had one or two small problems. These problems were fixed
by reseting the Visor while in the cradle.
I love having 8M of memory! I'm still only using about 2.5M, but that's
sure to change. Outside of that, it's still just the Palm OS. All
the applications that I ran on my Palm Pro before still work on the
Visor. I like the feel of it, it feels very sturdy. I've even dropped
it a few times at work and still have no problems.
There are only two things I can think of to change: 1. I don't like
the backlight on this model. It only works well in dark. In low
light, it's difficult to see the screen no matter if the backlight
is on or not. 2. I don't like the location of the IR port. I understand
the need to put it on the side, but it has been a little inconvenient
when beaming with the Palm folks who have it on top.
I haven't bought any Spring Board modules yet, but I plan to purchase
the modem. I also plan to buy either the GoType keyboard or the
Stowaway keyboard (haven't decided which yet).
But wherever I go, the Visor goes. I use it all the time... for my
to-do list, date book, address book as well as things like Avant Go.
I play games when I'm waiting at the doctor's office, and I have
other third party software to let me write long documents when I'm
away from home. I can't picture life without it!
