| BathtimeFriend's Full Review: Gateway Performance 600 |
The Good Bits
Okey dokey. I ordered this thing on August 27, 1999, and it was here, a week early, on September 8-- Gateway already had me smiling. A quick rundown of the system: 600MhZ Pentium 3 processor, 56k modem, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive, DVD rom, and mine has a 250 MB zip drive as well, though I'm told that this isn't standard. They have kigazz speakers too, though since I know nothing about speakers, I can't tell you all about them. Mine also has a 19" (17" viewable) color monitor that is fully adjustable, and an awesome customizable keyboard with all sorts of buttons for DVD/CD, commonly used programs, and a standby key.
The performance of this machine is nothing short of brilliant. I was amazed by how well it could handle multi-tasking (especially considering I was stepping up from a 25MhZ, 170 MB hard drive, etc.). The night of the first day I had it I was already online and had started my very own little web site. Gateway makes it easy for users of older systems to ease back into the game again. It also comes with all the latest software, like Windows 98, the newest Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape programs, all those word processing programs that you say you're going to use to write reports while you're really playing games, and stuff for your Soundblaster, as well as tons of other miscellaneous programs and files, like one that has road maps of the entire US.
The customer service is great with Gateway. I found them to be very helpful and, even though it takes hours, that is unavoidable when you have computer trouble and they made those hours as pleasant as possible. One guy I talked to even helped me take on my first ever total reformat!
The Bad Bits
In related issues, Hewlett Packard stuff like the DeskJet 895Cse printer and the ScanJet 5200C scanner are the crummiest I've ever encountered for my amiably compatible Gateway, and I don't recommend them, but Hewlett Packard is a different story from Gateway so I don't blame the loveable cow folks for that.
The Pink Bits
This thing is pink!
In Closing
Mmmmmmm...love it.
