| alfred.brown's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 R500VT |
The Dell Inspiron is a really great laptop with a 15" monitor that has better quality graphics than most desk top computers. It comes well equipped with features such as built in DVD and a 10/100 LAN & Modem card. The DVD and hard drive can be removed and a second battery can be placed in the slot. This is a great feature for extended use with out AC power and is perfect for field work or on the factory floor. The 6 gig hard drive will hold all of the software anyone can use for portable work.
The greatest fault of this machine is how much it weighs. The Inspiron is a burden to carry. On a trip to Chicago it became a real shoulder bender. Walking between terminals, one almost has to be a football player to tote it along with out suffering some discomfort.
Once seated on the lap though it is an ease to use with convenient plug in to any available phone line. But make sure you don't forget the special little cord that has to be used to connect to the modem card. If it is back in the office you won't be connecting to any network.
There is also one small feature which can be quite an annoyance. The switch that places the monitor in standby when the display section is closed has a real nasty habit of malfunctioning when your using the machine. It doesn't happen enough to warrant a service call and is a simple matter of touching it. It then allows the display to illuminate.
All in all it is a premium machine and once eyes are set on a lap top monitor that you can read things on from across the room, the little hassles fade. I can also say that on that same trip and delayed in the airport. It was nice to sit back and complete some work without squinting the eyes. It was also the envy of numerous commuters who had to stop and gag at the size of the screen.
