computer quickies for dummiesJun 28 '00 Write an essay on this topic.problem~ you just installed norton's anti-virus, but it's causing more hurt than help. now you can't get into your email! why do they put out programs that are just a hassle? you would think that they'd debug it first! i'm not an expert, but here are some nifty problem solvers... !!!!!PROGRAM DELETION TIPS!!!!!! * if you want to take a program off your computer, first go to 'my computer'(check desktop), then your 'control panel'. choose 'add/remove programs', and look for the program to be listed there. (if you do it this way, it takes out the program AND all it's related files!) * if not listed there: choose find, (files & folders) and type in the name of the program. you'd be surprised at how many files come with a program~ readme text, graphics & icons, oh my!!! . one time i wanted to remove a program, clicked find, and found 44 files!!! gross! (to select more than one file to delete at a time, hold down the CTRL button while selecting all. then right click {right button on your mouse} and choose delete.) * great!!! you've deleted this junk! it's gone, right? well, check your trash bin~ it may have been transferred there. just choose right click, and hit empty. {i love my trash. when you clear it out, marvin the martian claims "that wasn't a bit nice!") ~*~ explore your computer every now and then, and take off unwanted programs and files. be smart about your computer housekeeping. clutter is no good. !!!!!COMPUTER PERFORMANCE TIPS!!!!! i'm running my browser, and have been on for 5 or 6 hours. (not an unusual occurence!) i'm noticing that pages aren't loading nearly as fast as when i first got on. how do i check if my machine is running at top performance? * on the desktop again, locate 'my computer'. double click while holding down the ALT key. click on the tab marked performance. the number shoulc be about in the 80 - 90% region. if it has slipped down to 60, or even 50, REBOOT!!! that simple! choose start, shut-down, then reboot. i keep track of what it is when i reboot, so i know the normal performance level. and zap! a speedier computer right away! ~*~ computer housekeeping... ack! the computer says i'm running out of space on my C or D disk drive! * go to 'my computer'. find your disk drives. right click on it, and choose properties. mine has a nifty little pie graph showing used/available space. there is also a little button on the bottom titled 'disk cleanup' click, and it will show you temporary files, such as cookies, and stuff in your recycle bin that can be deleted. select and hit 'ok'! ta-dah!! a clear computer is a happy computer! this is great thing to do about once a week. ~*~ hope i helped out. please leave a comment if you don't understand, or if your system is completely different. i'll do my best to try to help out! happy surfing! =) <3, coltrane. |
