ATT WorldNet is WorstNet for internet game players

Written: Feb 02 '00
Pros:High number of email accounts
Cons:Poor latency

The majority of my computer time is spent playing multi-player internet games. In particular Ultima Online. But my review of ATT WorldNet applies to any multi-player internet game. The critical issue with internet games is latency. How long does it take the information to travel from your PC to the host and back. Good times are less than 100ms in my opinion. This is completely different than throughput, which is the quantity of data transmitted. You can have high throughput with bad latency. I tested 5 ISP's before deciding on which one to use (I chose a local provider). For my 56k connection the best I could get was about 200ms on any of them. By comparison I was getting values of 700ms consistently with ATT WorldNet. The overall range of latencies I saw were from 200ms to 1500ms. A 700ms latency is about 3/4 of a second, or about as long as it takes you to say 1000. In gaming situations the difference between your latency and your opponents is critical if you want to do well. Other aspects of the ATT WorldNet were comparable with the other service providers I tested. If you don't play multi-player games or you don't plan to, ATT WorldNet will be an acceptable choice. If you do play internet games I recommend trying several ISPs. See which ones consistently test well. Check various times of the day as some providers latency can vary greatly at peak usage times.
