Back to school... here's some advice
Aug 08 '00
For those of you who may be starting school soon, or have a child about to start his/her first year at school, here's some advice. Almost every computer on the market right now can handle the needs of the average student. Those needs typically include surfing the internet and printing reports. These two primary tasks are quite simple for all computers available today. One more thing will be necessary if you are planning to live on campus. You will need a network card. If you like the computer that doesn't cost a lot of money (under $1000) you'll need to add a network card to your new computer. No big deal, they typically cost around $20. If you don't know how to put it in you can have it installed at most places from between $20-$40.
This next section is for the parents who plan to buy a new computer for their child. When the salesperson starts to discuss the extended service contract, pay attention. You're buying this computer because your child needs it. That is one fact that won't change for the next four years. Most extended service contracts protect your computer for four years. Do you think that's a cooincidence? Manufacturers, salespeople, technicians, and so on all know that computers can break. They also know that when there is a problem with a computer, they cost a ton of money to fix. Unless you have coverage. Just consider a service contract a health insurance policy for your computer, but with no deductable. It's the best piece of mind you can purchase for your child's computer. Send your child off to school with his/her new PC and the comfort of knowing that if anything goes wrong, they don't have to worry. (also, they don't have to bother you with it)
