| jljohnston's Full Review: Philips PC Camera |
This review is for the PCA645VC, which has been replaced by newer models.
I purchased this because I thought it would be a fun thing to have and because Philips can generally be trusted for quality; the price was right ($35 auction).
This is a SOLID little camera, made in Portugal. It has a built in mike and a funny little rubber foot that it nestles in. The focus is manually adjustable. It is a USB peripheral.
Upon hooking it up, the audio portion would not work. So, I called Philips PC Customer support and a very knowledgeable rep explained that my computer's BIOS was probably not updated. He was 100% correct, and after I downloaded and updated my HP Pavillion's BIOS, the PC cam worked perfectly. Kudos to Philips' customer service!
I've seen the picture quality of other PC cams, and this one seems the equal of the best. It adjusts very quickly to changing light conditions, isn't bothered by flourescents, and seems to have better color rendering than most.
This camera comes with it's own video email program, which compresses the files and automatically accesses your email and internet connection and sends the "VidMail" complete with an executable viewer. They're big files, so unless you have and are sending to people with high speed internet connections, it may not be a welcome feature. If you have the connection speed, it's a fun feature. The software is easy to use.
The only criticisms are that the rubber foot is a little hard to adjust the camera on and the indicator light is on at all times the computer is powered up.
