Cybermax: Satisfaction

Like sutskever, I also bought a Cybermax computer five years ago. I was just getting my foot in the computer field and was still rather new to the market with a very limited budget. What first attracted me to them was an ad in Computer Shopper. They laid out the features very well, giving me a solid idea of what I would be receiving and their Pentium 120 ranked low in the prices at the time. The sales rep I spoke with admittedly almost turned me away. I felt he was rather unenthused about my business and he also seemed offended when I questioned the amount of time it would take to deliver the machine. With a little pressing, he explained the burn-in process and why they did this which helped bring me back. I ordered my box and received it within the time they specified. I did have a problem with the monitor, there was a bad pin in the connector giving it a green-ish tint. When I spoke to them, they said they'd send a new one out and just asked that I pack the defective unit up in the new box and use the supplied label to return it. It arrived a few days later in perfect working order, I packed the old one up and shipped it out and had no need to contact them for it again.
In the past five years, I've had plenty of time to reflect on what I would do differently for my next purchase. Would I buy from Cybermax again? I would definitely put them high on the list if I were going to buy a pre-assembled computer. However, I will build my next one and buying this machine and looking at other companies helped me come to this decision. Two of the components that came with the Cybermax have been headaches: the STB video card and the Ensoniq sound card. Nothing technically wrong with either but the drivers have been difficult with them as well as little things like specific microphone company incompatibilities with the sound card. Also, last I checked they're now using AMD chips, I'm an Intel guy. Again, not bad or inadequate parts but they're not what I would put in my computer now. Five years later and I've only had to replace the hard drive for more space and add more memory -- its what I'm typing on now and work and play on until I can afford a new one!
