Phillips CDRW - 400 Series
I have read a lot of reviews on this Phillips product here at Epinions, some good and some bad. Personally, I have had no problems with mine other than a few errors on my own part, and feel it is an excellent unit. Phillips was one of the pioneers of writeable media, and have been in the business well over 10 years.
I am a Computer Technician by trade, so setting this unit up was a piece of cake for me. The documentation provided for installation was thorough enough that anyone comfortable with it should have little problems installing this unit. The 400 series comes both as an external or internal unit, and has various read and write speeds. The drive supports write speeds of 1X, 2X, and 4X, Rewrite up to 4X, and reads of 16X, 24X and 32X depending on the specific model.
I found the software to be adequate for most desired uses, but reading the documentation is pretty much mandatory. There are 4 different applications and each has it's specific uses. I would highly recommend thoroughly reading all documentation prior to using this unit for the first time.
I would also like to share some technical information that may assist in the operation and successful burning of different types of data on this burner. The following is some "Need to know" information about this drive, and CD writers in general.
1. CD-writers work best as master drives on their own controller.
(You can slave them to other drives, but they really want to be boss)
2. Burning CD's works faster if data is first copied to your hard
disk drive. It is more reliable than CD to CD.
3. Quit or disable any applications, anti-virus software and screensavers before beginning the writing process. This will both speed up the process, and avoid stalling of the writing process.
4. Music CD's should be burned at 1X. This is the speed that your
CD changer and portable CD players operate. You can burn these at 2X and 4X, but they will only work on a computer.
5. 16X CD readers and older may or may not be compatible with CD's burned at speeds above 2X. Data integrity is questionable at higher speeds. This is not an issue with 24X units or faster.
Technical Specs can be obtained at the Phillips site at the following URL:

Hopefully this information will help those of you having bad experiences with using a CD writer. Mine is a 4X4X32 model I paid $179 for and I couldn't be happier with it. Happy Computing!!
